Statistics calculator

Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines to get the average, median, mode, spread and quartiles — with a histogram of your data.

Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to a server.

Which average should I use?

  • Mean — the sum divided by the count. Sensitive to outliers: one very high salary drags it up.
  • Median — the middle value when sorted. Better for skewed data like house prices and incomes.
  • Mode — the most common value. Useful for categories and shoe sizes.

Sample vs population standard deviation

Use the population formula (divide by n) when your list is every value you care about, and the sample formula (divide by n − 1) when it’s a sample drawn from a larger group — the usual case in surveys and experiments. Quartiles use linear interpolation, the same method as Excel’s QUARTILE.INC.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the mean?

Add all the numbers and divide by how many there are.

How do I enter my data?

Paste numbers separated by commas, spaces, tabs or new lines — a column copied from a spreadsheet works.

What does standard deviation tell me?

How spread out the values are. In roughly normal data, about 68% of values fall within one standard deviation of the mean.
